Benauge Fire Station

The fire station was built opposite the 18th century docks façade on the left bank between 1950 and 1954 by the architect Claude Ferret in a resolutely modernist style, which provoked considerable protest at the time.
It consists of several buildings and a tower structured around a central courtyard.
The main façade housed forty living quarters over five stories. The low wing at right angles to the Rue de la Benauge housed the administration; the other buildings were used as workshops and garages.
The design of the building (the hierarchical treatment of the openings, the stilts construction, and the use of primary colours) was inspired by the functionalist theories of the great architect Le Corbusier.
