Municipal Archives

In 1642, Jeanne de Seurin, widow of Pierre de Ragueneau, Councillor with the Bordeaux Parliament, entrusted the architect Pierre Léglise with the construction of this mansion, built between its courtyard and garden. The façade displays a mannerist decoration inspired by themes from the Renaissance, with lion’ heads, foliage and spiral scrolls around the windows… The gallery was built in the 18th century to connect the two wings, together with the gateway flanked by jonic columns and topped by a corbelled vault. The building housing the Tax Office purchased by the City in 1860, has been the home since 1939 of the municipal archives.

In 2014, the Municipal Archives will be relocated to the right bank of the Garonne, to the former Flour Exchange, renovated and transformed into a cultural institution by the Belgian architects Robbrecht and Daem.
