Régie municipale du gaz

This work by architect Raoul Jourde was built between 1932 and 1934 by mayor Adrien Marquet. Its architectural modernity is due to a bold contrast between vertical and horizontal lines. Its original aesthetic stand – it has been changed since – was based on the use of modern materials. The 47-meter flare and light sign showing the letters of the Administration (RMGE) first stirred a controversy as it competed with the Pey-Berland campanile in the urban landscape. This is how the Electricity Fairy lit Bordeaux into modernity.
