BORDEAUX OCEAN PORT (1/8)

Floating Basins

 XXVII C 6

The plans for the floating basins were passed in 1868. They included a vast supply reservoir filled by the Eysines river and a floating basin with a lock connected to the Garonne. This covered an 8 ha area, with 1700m of quays for ships, and two locks of 13- and 22-metres wide allowing all kinds of boats to pass through.
While the first floating basin was completed in 1879, in 1906 the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux began the construction of a new basin completed six years later. A 25-metre wide sluice connects the two basins.
