In 1840 the "bridge" square was completed according to initial plans by Billaudel and Deschamps. These planned a two-storey façade above an arcaded gallery, like the prestigious Bordeaux palaces.
At the end of the 19th century, the considerable development of the area led to new improvements: jets of water, candelabras, benches, etc. The improvements linked to the tramway, with the installation of the Blue Lion by Xavier Veilhan, have revived the appearance and atmosphere of this public space that had been invaded by cars since the 1950s.
