Fort du Hâ
Archives municipales de Bordeaux
VIII S 38 Rec45
The Fort du Hâ was once a fortress but now houses the National School of Magistracy and the Palace of Justice.
Its construction began in 1456, shortly after the recapture of Bordeaux from the English. King Charles VII ordered its construction at the same time as the Château Trompette in order to "keep the sword on the back of the people of Bordeaux" and to defend the city against the English. From 1731, the fort became a public prison, then during the Reign of Terror was a State prison.
The demolition of the fort began in 1835 in order to build the new Palace of Justice and the new prison. Only the two towers were retained and they are now listed as historic monuments.
