JOURNEY AROUND THE HERITAGE OF THE RAMPARTS (4/8)
Marché des Douves market
Archives municipales de Bordeaux
134 M 7
This magnificent building is late evidence of metal market architecture in Bordeaux, built just beneath the ramparts by the municipal architect Charles Durand between 1884 and 1886. The interior, with its elegant iron framework, is supported by 34 small cast iron columns. The details of the ironwork stalls, the play of light coming from overhead and from the side, the combination of stone and brick foundations, the doors topped with pediments, the glass, the wood and the awnings used in the shuttered walls.... make this building the jewel in the crown of Durand's municipal career, the high point of the view along the Rue des Douves.
