Place André Meunier

The Louis fort included three remarkable elements: the weep holes (late 14th century), the bastion (circa 1530) and the land-grabbing of the complex (circa 1680).
The decision taken to demolish the complex in 1808 freed up land for the municipal abattoirs (1832). The architect Durand imagined a dark and functional complex with arcades linked by moulding.
The transfer of the abattoirs to Quai de Paulette led to their post-war demolition. They were replaced by a small public garden by the architects Mathieu and Vollette. Meanwhile, many functions were devised for this space: university housing, investment property and even a house of the people. Place André-Meunier, beneath which lie the remains of the Louis fort, is now the subject of an urban redevelopment project.
